International Songwriting Competition (ISC) announces 2013 Winners

The International Songwriting Competition (ISC), recognized as the most prestigious and respected international songwriting competition, has today announced its 2013 winners.

ISC's overall Grand Prize is awarded to Japanese trumpeter Shunzo Ohno for his song "Musashi," entered in the Jazz category. This is the first time in the 13-year history of ISC that the Grand Prize has been awarded to either an artist in the Jazz category or an artist from Japan.

Winners were selected by a panel of judges which included Imagine Dragons, Martina McBride, Joshua Redman, Josh Turner, Keane, Jon Secada, Dido, Garbage, Darryl McDaniels (Run D.M.C.), James Cotton, Boney James, Jason Isbell, Anoushka Shankar, Monte Lipman (Founder, Chairman, and CEO, Republic Records), Dan McCarroll (President, Warner Bros. Records), Alison Donald (Co-President, Columbia Records UK), and more.

Founder and Director Candace Avery states, "It is vital for all artists to be recognized for their talents and awarded the due respect for their accomplishments. This year we have awarded the ISC Grand Prize to a Jazz artist, and we applaud the importance of this genre in our musical landscape. The recipient, Shunzo Ohno, greatly deserves this honor, and ISC is proud to bestow this award on him."

Shunzo Ohno is a virtuosic jazz trumpeter and an accomplished composer and arranger. Ohno has performed with jazz legends Art Blakey & The Messengers, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Gil Evans, Larry Coryell, Machito & His Afro-Cuban Orchestra, and many more. With numerous recordings under his own name as a leader, he has also appeared on over 30 more as a sideman and has collaborated on two Grammy winning recordings.

Ohno has been described as modest and seemingly shy, and he has overcome health challenges in his life that would have potentially ended any musician's career. Surviving both a serious car accident in which his teeth and lips were permanently damaged and a later bout of throat cancer which forced him to relearn his playing, he is a testament to determination and courage, even inspiring a biography and documentary in Japan about his life.

For a more in-depth bio on Ohno, please go to http://www.songwritingcompetition.com/pressreleases

ISC awards more than $150,000 in cash and prizes to amateur and professional songwriters around the world. The Grand Prize winner is awarded $25,000 in cash (US) and an additional $35,000 in merchandise and services. Recorded in 2000, Griffin's "Lost" 'Silver Bell' Album Features "Top Of The World" and "Truth #2," Later Covered by Dixie Chicks.

"Patty's voice became my favorite voice the moment I heard her sing, and Silver Bell is one brilliant song after the next. I have loved this album for 13 years and didn't think it could get better, but it has. This version has that incredible voice front and center where it always belongs." - Natalie Maines

"There's a whole lot of singing/That's never gonna be heard/Disappearing every day/Without so much as a word," sings Patty Griffin in "Top Of The World," a song from her unreleased album, Silver Bell, recorded in 2000 and intended to be the follow-up to her hard-rocking 1998 sophomore release, Flaming Red. The album was not released by A&M Records, a victim of the label's turn-of-the-century ownership change, and until now, it has remained a missing piece from Griffin's acclaimed catalog. Newly mixed by legendary producer Glyn Johns, Silver Bell will be released for the first time on October 8 by Universal Music Enterprises across all major digital and physical music retailers.

Silver Bell features 14 original songs recorded at Daniel Lanois' Kingsway Studio in New Orleans by Griffin on vocals, guitar and piano with guitarist Doug Lancio, keyboardist John Deaderick, bassist Frank Swart, and percussionist Billy Beard. Emmylou Harris also joined Griffin in the studio to sing harmony on "Truth #2."

Despite its 13 years of limbo, the sought-after album spawned two huge hits for the Dixie Chicks, who covered both "Top Of The World" and "Truth #2" for their six-million-selling 2002 Home album. In addition, the band's Natalie Maines recorded Silver Bell's title track for her recent solo debut, Mother.

Through the years, Griffin's original songs have also been covered by many other notable artists, including Solomon Burke, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Kelly Clarkson, Martina McBride, Bette Midler, Ben Harper, Bon Iver, Linda Ronstadt, Ellie Goulding & Lissie, Melissa Etheridge, Jessica Simpson, Miranda Lambert, Shooter Jennings, and Joan Osborne.

Since parting with A&M, Griffin has continued her successful, critically-acclaimed career, releasing 1000 Kisses (2002, ATO Records), Impossible Dream (2004, ATO Records), Children Running Through (2007, ATO Records), the GRAMMY® Award winning Downtown Church (2010, Credential Recordings), and her latest album, American Kid, released in May (New West Records).

Oz Knozz "True Believer" Reviewed by A. Dorian

Self produced 8/10.

In a way Oz Knozz reminds me of the old Schlotzsky's commercial, "funny name, serious sandwich". Not that the last album production was bad but this one is downright impressive thanks to having Brian Baker on board as engineer...

Grand Prize Is Awarded To Canadian Country Artist Wes Mack

August 29, 2013 - The winners of the 2013 Unsigned Only Music Competition were announced today, representing ten genres of contemporary music. With 22 winners and 100 Honorable Mentions, the US-based competition awards over $50,000 in cash and prizes, including a $10,000 cash prize to the overall Grand Prize winner.

The overall Grand Prize winner is awarded to rising Canadian country artist Wes Mack. His song "Duet" was the overwhelming favorite with the judges who predict a great future for this young and promising unsigned artist. From the silver screen as a film and television star to sold-out performances with Florida Georgia Line, Wes Mack is quickly taking the world of country music by storm. Influenced by artists as diverse as Hank Williams and The Beatles, Mack says, "I would always listen to those tapes with my parents on long road trips through the mountains. That's where I learned the melodies and storytelling which influences me today." As an actor, Mack has built up an impressive resume, including his recurring role in the CBC Western drama, Heartland, playing an up-and-coming country musician. In the past year, Mack has been writing and recording his music in Vancouver and Nashville, and his first single "Duet," featuring Carly McKillip of One More Girl, is currently charting on Canadian country radio.

The judging panel consists of iconic recording artists Chrissie Hynde (The Pretenders); Iggy Pop; Neon Trees; Hunter Hayes; Cyndi Lauper; Dustin Lynch; Carly Simon; Brandi Carlile; John Oates (Hall & Oates); 3 Doors Down; Of Monsters And Men; David Crowder; Darryl McDaniels (Run D.M.C.); G. Love; Craig Morgan; Jason Gray; Ryan Bingham; Aaron Shust; and The Mountain Goats. Judges also include a group of influential music journalists and editors from Rolling Stone, Paste Magazine, The Washington Post, and Spin.

Unsigned Only honors artists who are unsigned to a major record label and acts as a benchmark for excellence in this arena of contemporary music. Unsigned Only is a fresh and novel approach to other music competitions. In addition to offering prizes, recognition, exposure, and the chance to be heard by a prestigious judging panel, Unsigned Only takes it a step further and offers the Grand Prize winner the once-in-a-lifetime chance to be mentored by and directly network with the top echelon of record company professionals. Mentors include presidents and top-level executives from Universal Republic, Capitol, Vagrant, RCA, Bad Boy Entertainment, Disney Music Group, Atlantic, Sony, Big Machine, Word, and G-Unit.

Founders Candace Avery and Jim Morgan said, "With more than 9,000 entries from all over the world, the competition was so competitive, and the finalists impressed the judges with the immense talent displayed. We owe a great thank-you to our dedicated judges who demonstrated their critical knowledge of music in selecting this year's winners, and we are proud to recognize these winners. We are excited to now present our Grand Prize winner to our group of mentors, and we anticipate the experience to be beneficial."

Fight For My Soul Out September 17th On Concord Music Group.

It's been seven years since Jonny Lang released a new studio album, but the wait is almost over. Lang has signed a new recording deal with Concord Music Group and will release Fight For My Soul - the follow up to his Grammy Award Winning 2006 album "Turn Around", in North America on September 17th. The album will be released on the Mascot Label Group in the UK and Europe on September 2nd.

"This particular record has taken quite a long time to finish for a lot of different reasons" Lang remarked. "Most of all, I started having kids a few years back. Between being with the family, and being out on the road touring, the last thing you want to do when home is to go make a record. I'm really happy with the body of work we have for this one. It's kind of hard to be excited and know what the record is going to be like when the process is extended over such a long period of time. Today, sitting here, I'm really proud of the recordings." Lang has been working on the release for three years with Producer Tommy Sims, who co-wrote Eric Clapton's Grammy winning "Change the World." The duo collaborated on the project from the ground up.

Fight For My Soul truly defies categorization by a single genre. The textured arrangements, broad worldview, gorgeous vocal melodies, and expressive guitar playing are what defines the album. It is unequivocally what Lang aimed to achieve over the long period he has been working on reaching a realized vision. He offers, "Much of what I've experienced through music and life in general is in these songs. I really like reaching out and connecting with people. For me, this is what it's all about. It keeps it fresh with different experiences every day."

Since the release of his 1997 major label debut "Lie To Me", the then 16 year-old Lang has built a reputation as one of the best live performers and guitarists of his generation. As always, Jonny Lang will be on the road leading up to and beyond the release date of Fight For My Soul. Along with a full North American tour schedule, in October Lang will embark on his first extended European tour in over a decade.
