Tuesday, Sep 26th, 2006 OBITUARY Copyright 2006 Houston Chronicle Jerry Lightfoot, a blues-rock club staple of Houston in the 1980s, died Wednesday in Austin. He was 55. The cause of death was not available Wednesday night. Lightfoot was a well-known fixture at the defunct nightspot Rockefellers, where he and his group, The Essentials, played as the house band two decades ago. Though he played originals from the band's album Burning Desire, he also backed blues heavyweights such as B.B. King and John Lee Hooker. more at Chron.Com Monday, Aug 21st, 2006 CITY OF HOUSTON'S 170th BIRTHDAY ON AUG. 23 - ZZ Top Set For Houston Hall Of Fame Honor The members of ZZ Top - Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard - are set to be inducted into the City of Houston's Hall of Fame at a gala dinner set for August 23 at the Wortham Theater in downtown Houston. The group, over the course of more than 36 years, has come to be known as "that little ol' band from Texas " but traces its roots specifically to Houston where, in 1969, Billy, of the Moving Sidewalks, joined forces with Dusty and Frank of the American Blues. The Houston Hall of Fame is replete with Houstonians who have played key roles on the national and international scene including heart surgery pioneers Michael DeBakey and Denton Cooley, Senator Lloyd Bentsen, Secretary of State James A. Baker, boxing champ and entrepreneur George Foreman, NBA great Clyde Drexler, former Continental Airlines Chairman Gordon Bethune, Olympic gold medalist Mary Lou Retton, Houston Astros owner Drayton McLane, and other notables. ZZ Top have received many honors in the past including having been named Heroes of the State of Texas by the legislature, proclaimed Ambassadors of Goodwill for the state numerous times and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. This latest acknowledgement of their place in the pantheon of Houston greats coincides with the city's celebration of its 170th birthday and the evening August 23rd has been designated as "A Night of Cowboys and Culture" by Houston Mayor Bill White. ZZ Top will be inducted into the Houston Hall of Fame along with Pearce Industries Board Chairman Louis M. Pearce, Jr., real estate magnate Ed Wulfe and, posthumously, Dominique and John de Menil who had been instrumental in making Houston a first tier city in terms of fine arts and culture. The band, delighted with their having been cited for this extraordinary honor, released the following statement: "We're thrilled to be recognized by the city we love for doing what we love for all these years. We did a song a while back entitled, 'Heaven, Hell or Houston' and we're now quite convinced that the city is much closer to the former than the latter."

Tuesday, Aug 15th, 2006 GOGIRLSMUSIC FOUNDER, FRIENDS GO OUT ON A LIMB TO CELEBRATE 10TH After making a (cool) mark on a fast-growing segment of the indie music biz, Madalyn Sklar announces new label to kick off second decade Some people go for cake. Others prefer speeches and formal dinners. Madalyn Sklar decided to celebrate the tenth anniversary of gogirlsmusic.com, an online community she founded to connect with other women musicians in 1996, in a much more hands-on way—and her friends joined her. Sklar is the creator of the GoGirlsMusicFest, Invasion of the GoGirls @ SXSW, Battle of the GoGirls and more. In the last 6 years, she has spearheaded over 100 benefit showcases for various organizations including the Rock 'n' Roll Camp for Girls, MusiCares, American Liver Foundation, Nicole Brown Charitable Foundation and many more. She also recently launched GoGirlsMusic Records, an independent digital music content provider, distributor and record label. The label works closely with indie artists to get ‘great "women in music"’ heard without the artist giving up ownership or paying big bucks. Add the 8,500 fans on her MySpace page, and it’s obvious Sklar could have a huge party in an arena with about 12,000 of her closest friends. Instead, she came up with yet another innovative idea, and took partying (and brand awareness) to an entirely new level. In February, Sklar had the GoGirlsMusic logo tattooed on her ankle while in Austin, TX for Folk Alliance. “I figured getting some ink was a pretty unique way to celebrate,” said Sklar, who is considered one of the premier consultants and educators in the indie music market. “We’ve built our reputation by doing the unexpected, so why not?” What followed is destined to become the stuff of indie music legend: her friend and fellow GoGirls member Leslie Starnes of Austin-based Bon Terra got the tattoo; then her partner Georgia; then GoGirl Melissa Mullins. One night. Four tattoos. A record that will stand for quite some time, and a hell of a story for the Rolling Stone interview someday. Leslie and Melissa scored lifetime memberships, an offer that Sklar extended to all GoGirls members. Today, just six months later, 10 women are sporting GoGirls tattoos and she fully expects to see more at each subsequent GoGirlsMusic event. That’s way cooler (and longer lasting) than cake. Thursday, Jun 29th, 2006 ANT BOOGIE TO PULL OUT ALL THE STOPS JULY 1st Through all the changes Collective Hallucination has gone through in the 7 years they've been around, a few things remain constant; 2)
The band DOES NOT BELIEVE IN lyp-synching, performing to tracks or any
gimmicks to get the music across.
3) The band has always incorporated touches of rock, jazz, funk and soul into it's show.
4) A CH show is an unforgettable show.
July 1st will be no exception to the rule. Ant Boogie says to expect some surprises: "We've
never really performed any Prince songs in the past, this time we will.
Yeah, I know I've broken out with "Raspberry Beret" from time to time,
but on the 1st were going to REALLY do some Prince. Forever
people have expected me to do Prince, that's why I've consciously
stayed away from the Prince tunes. Not July 1st though. We're also incorporatiing some old school disco into our set!! It's gonna be too crazy!" Ant Said.
When asked what Prince tunes CH will perform Ant could only say come to the show.
"The band has been working hard to create a great show. We hope u dont miss it!!"
"Everything is different now", says AB, "the
band has gelled to the point where we're all reading each others minds.
Its wild and exciting. It's kinda freaky too think about it."

I've attached a flyer and letter with more explanation of why we're doing this, but briefly, her mom is a single mom with no child support or insurance, and she lost her job because of Devon's illness. We're trying to help the family. If you can attend, please do, if you can't, please donate. Donation information is at the bottom of the flyer. Also, please forward this to as many people as you can. If you're a member of MySpace, go to the main events page and do a search for "Dollars for Devon" and you can forward that event invitation to everyone, and bulletin and blog it on your MySpace pages. "To most fifteen year old girls, the most pressing questions in life are concerned with best friends, boys, and the way their hair looks. Sadly, these innocent worries are not the case for Devon Graves. Her concerns are getting through chemotherapy treatment, losing her hair, regaining her health, all while trying to hold on to some semblance of a normal life. Three months ago Devon had pain and swelling in her arm that gave her mother some concerns which led to going to the doctor. This would later be a blessing in disguise. The swelling in her arm was caused by a tumor on her neck that was large enough to cut off the circulation in her arm. Tests were run and Devon was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Hodgkin's Lymphoma or Hodgkin's Disease is a malignant(cancerous) growth of cells in the lymph system. Since Devon’s mother, Tamara, had missed several days of work due to Devon’s illness and subsequent surgery, her employer was unable to leave her position unfilled at her job and Tamara was asked to leave her position. Tamara is a single mother raising two daughters without the aid of child support and health insurance. While Devon and her family face these obstacles, their friends and family would like to ask for your support. Any type of donations will be greatly appreciated. One hundred percent of all donations will be used for Devon and her family. Thank you!" Following is the band line-up for the benefit: Outside Stage

Thursday, Jun 1st, 2006 Army Builders Accept Blame Over Flooding of New Orleans (I'm sorry to post this to my music site but I've seen too many broadcasts, even back years ago, that this exact scenario would happen if Louisiana did not get federal help with the levee system surrounding New Orleans! ~ peace, mlandrum) Published: June 2, 2006In a sweeping new study of the causes of the disaster in New Orleans last year, the Army Corps of Engineers concludes that the levees it built in the city were an incomplete patchwork of protection, containing flaws in design and construction and not built to handle a storm anywhere near the strength of Hurricane Katrina. Ozier Muhammad/The New York Times
As hurricane season began Thursday, workers in New Orleans finished part of a floodwall along the Industrial Canal in the Lower Ninth Ward. Hurricane KatrinaOzier Muhammad/The New York Times
Floodgate work continues on the 17th Street Canal, which separates New Orleans from Metairie, and drains into Lake Pontchartrain. "The hurricane protection system in New Orleans and southeast Louisiana was a system in name only," said the draft of the nine-volume report, released Thursday in New Orleans. Several outside engineering panels that have been critical of the corps have come to similar conclusions, and have found a more extensive chain of flaws in the design, construction and maintenance of the 350-mile levee system. But the 6,113-page report is remarkable for being a product of the corps' own official investigation, which brought together 150 experts from government, academia and business to study what went wrong and how to build better systems for the future. The region's network of levees, floodwalls, pumps and gates lacked any built-in resilience that would have allowed the system to remain standing and provide protection even if water flowed over the tops of levees and floodwalls, the report's investigators found. Flaws in the levee design that allowed breaches in the city's drainage canals were not foreseen, and those floodwalls failed even though the storm waters did not rise above the level that the walls were designed to hold. But the system was also overwhelmed in significant ways by Hurricane Katrina, and some degree of flooding would have happened even if the floodwalls had not been breached by the surging waters, the report stated. "Regardless of breaching or no breaching, there would have been massive flooding and losses" from the hurricane, Lewis E. Link, the director of the study and a senior research engineer at the University of Maryland, said in an interview. "The losses were increased because of the breaching that occurred." The investigators found no evidence of negligence or malfeasance by the corps or its contractors, but said the corps had failed to take into account the tendency of the local soil to sink over time, leaving some sections of levee lower than they should have been. The corps did not re-examine the heights of levees even after it had been warned about the degree of subsidence, the report said. Similarly, the corps designed the system to protect New Orleans against a relatively low-strength hurricane, the report found, and did not respond to warnings over the years from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration that a stronger hurricane should have been the standard. The report suggested the corps has had trouble keeping up with the fast-changing world of geotechnical engineering, and does not share critical information among its many parts. Although the corps had indications that the floodwalls might fail under intense storm conditions, "the pieces were not put together to solve the puzzle," the report said. More must be done, it concluded, to share information among those who do research and those who design and build systems. The report, which is already being used in the repair and improvement of New Orleans's flood protection, warned that the area "remains vulnerable" to any storm with surge and wave conditions like Hurricane Katrina's. The chief engineer of the corps, Lt. Gen. Carl A. Strock, said in an interview that the report showed that "we missed something in the design," particularly in the construction of the drainage canal floodwalls that caused so much of the flooding. According to the report, the corps designers did not anticipate the way the floodwalls would fail as water climbed high against them: in several breaches, including the one at the 17th Street Canal, the force of the water pushed the floodwall back slightly, opening a gap deep into the earthen levee below that allowed water to course down under high pressure and push the wall aside. General Strock did not go so far, however, as to apologize on behalf of the corps for the decades of decisions that went into the system. "It is what it is," he said. "Call it a mea culpa, or call it a dry recognition, or admission, or whatever — but we're not ducking our accountability and responsibility in this." Thursday, May 25th, 2006 1st ANNUAL On Fullers Vintage Guitars Everybody in the If you are a Wednesday, May 24th, 2006 Legendary club owner Clifford Antone dies Clifford Antone, 56, the legendary music club owner, died Tuesday. He died of an apparent heart attack, his sister said. His tale begins when a man from Port Arthur named Clifford Antone came to Austin in 1975. In 2005, Antone's club celebrated its 30th anniversary. The club opened its original location on East Sixth Street as a small music venue on a street and neighborhood long ignored. It attracted famous blues acts from the Chicago and New York blues scenes. Among the players there were the likes of Chicago bluesman Buddy Guy and a very young Stevie Ray Vaughan. During the club's first year, B.B. King made an appearance. The club is now in its third location. That same club's success led to the birth of the now-famous East Sixth Street entertainment district, the heart and soul of Austin's multi-million dollar tourist trade and led to the city's nickname of "Live Music Capital of the World." For Austin, it's the heart and soul of a multi-million dollar tourist industry. In 2000, Antone went to prison on federal charges of drug trafficking and money laundering. He was released in 2003 after serving three years of a four-year sentence. He had a change of tune later in life and turned his attention to helping kids. The club held benefits for at-risk youth. His career and the club's history was captured in the documentary Antone's: Home of the Blues "One of the primary reasons Austin is known as the Live Music Capital of the World is because of Clifford Antone. His devotion to the music spoke for itself. He was my friend and I will miss him dearly," Austin Mayor Will Wynn said. "I ask Austinites to join with me and remember the music giant this city has lost and the great things he brought to our community." "I'm very proud of this CD. It's a true ensemble effort with Karen Mal, Wayne Wilkerson, & Bill Ward all over it. If you could ever get the 4 of us together then sprinkle in the occasional Gary Sapone on harmonica, Jeff Duncan on fiddle, and Ron Rebstock on banjo this is what we'd sound like live and kickin'. It was recorded, edited, and mixed at Bill Ward's Living Room Studio. The gorgeous art work is done by my lovely wife, Sue" Tuesday, Apr 25th, 2006 Jandek makes suprise Houston apperance! The most undergound musician in America, Houston's own Jandek made an unannounced surprise appearance with Loren Connors and Alan Licht at the Live Oak Friends Meeting House in Houston on March 10, 2006. The venue is a Quaker church that is sometimes used for concerts; the show was sponsored by Pauline Oliveros’s Deep Listening Institute. According to the promoters, this was not a “Jandek’ performance per se, but just the representative from Corwood Industries sitting in with Connors and Licht. After Connors and Licht played as a duo, the representative joined them onstage, playing bass on one long piece and harmonica for on shorter piece. The bass was a Godin fretless acoustic/electric bass, the same make as the fretless electric guitar he played in Brooklyn, and presumably the same instrument he played on the recent bass albums. Jandek has releasde over 40 albums in the last 25 years but has never given a public interview or played a live show until he booked a show playing the Instal Festival in 2004. No interviews have been given but he has played various festivals and one off shows since that appearance. Cheers, JEFFREY THAMES [King Of Grief] Sunday, Apr 16th, 2006 Houston Festival Highlights JamaicaHOUSTON, April 16 (UPI) --Houston will be highlighting all things Jamaican this week when the Houston International Festival gets under way. Jim Austin, who heads the foundation that puts on the festival, told the Houston Chronicle Sunday he thinks this year's Jamaican theme will be a big hit with those attending the festival, dubbed I-Fest. It's also a big hit with Jamaican-Americans like Howard and Veronica Ricketts, whose home in northwest Harris County is full of souvenirs of their native land. Yet according to Howard Ricketts, Jamaica's greatest export isn't rum. "One of the greatest exports from Jamaica is its people," Ricketts said. "And they came to this country because of lack of opportunity in Jamaica." The couple hope the festival will shed some light on positive things about Jamaica. It begins with a Jamaica film screening at Houston's Museum of Fine Arts on Thursday followed by an opening ceremony on Friday. The bulk of the festivities will take place over the weekend. © UPI, Headline News Powered by Bravenet.com Friday, Apr 14th, 2006 I've never done a feature on Blue October. Monday, Apr 3rd, 2006 Martinez takes top prize, Dust Devils sweep the 4th Annual Texas Music Awards LINDEN, TX – The 4th Annual Texas Music Awards, presented by MyTexasMusic.com and hosted by singing legend Michael Martin Murphey, were held at the historic Music City Texas Theater in Linden, Texas this past weekend to a sold-out crowd. USA Network’s Nashville Star finalist John Arthur Martinez of Marble Falls, Texas, was named 2006 Entertainer of the Year, and was also on hand to present the Record of the Year award for which he was honored in 2005, to Mike Siler for his song “It’s About To Get Western.” Coincidentally, Marble Falls is also home to the Dust Devils, a Roots Rock/Americana combo formed around the husband-and-wife team of Kevin Higgins and Barbara Malteze. The Dust Devils walked away with four out of the five award categories they were nominated in, including Female Vocalist of the Year (Malteze), Song of the Year (“Walk On” written by Higgins), Vocal Duo or Group of the Year, and Album of the Year (GATHERING DUST). They continued to stun spectators with their performance of “Walk On,” which included a solo break by Malteze, who did a brief tribute to Janis Joplin, one of her major influences. During her acceptance speech for receiving Female Vocalist of the Year, Malteze told a story about her grandfather pulling a coffee can out of his freezer so he could give her enough money to pursue her musical ambitions as a young woman in California. “My grandfather gave me his cold, hard cash – literally!” she exclaimed, to the delight of the crowd. Other award recipients include Jimmy Kaiser for Male Vocalist of the Year, John Greenberg for Producer of the Year, Mike Siler for Record of the Year, Texas Renegade Band for Live Band of the Year, Hayes Carll for Singer/Songwriter of the Year, Big John Mills for Musician of the Year, Clay DuBose for Rising Star of the Year, and RadioFreeTexas.org for Radio Station of the Year. The Live Band of the Year, Radio Station of the Year, and Disc Jockey of the Year awards are the only award categories voted on 100% by the listening public. Justin Frazell, of 99.5 The Wolf in Dallas, Texas, took home the Disc Jockey of the Year award for the second time in a row, a TMA first. Founders awards are also given in three categories. The 2006 Musical Event of the Year was given to “A Texas Hill Country Christmas,” produced by Stephen and Sue Ann Meyer of the Lodge Recording Studio and benefiting Candlelight Ranch. Two MyTexan awards were presented to MyTexasMusic.com members Grady Lee and Richard Bowden, and one Palmwood award was presented to Jackie Bryant. The shows producers, Jinelle and Lucky Boyd, co-founders of MyTexasMusic.com, began show preparations in November of 2005, and enlisted the help and support of more than 80 volunteers and several businesses and organizations. “East Texas is such an untapped area full of Texas music lovers – we were thrilled to be able to bring this prestigious event to this neck of the woods. It was a great success,” said Jinelle Boyd. Prior to the show, the producers met with all of the nominees to brief them on the day’s events. The Boyds are quick to point out that those receiving awards are ‘award recipients,’ and not ‘winners.’ “When you announce that someone is the ‘winner’ of an award, that denotes that there must be a ‘loser,’ and there are none of those in this room today,” declared Lucky Boyd, when addressing the nominees. Immediately following their acceptance of their awards, each recipient filmed a television commercial with the Texas Farm Bureau for Murphey's upcoming benefit telethon and concert in Amarillo. The event will raise money for victims of the Texas panhandle graze land wildfires that have been ravaging that part of the state. Murphey closed the show with an intimate performance of three of his most beloved songs. "He was one of my first musical influences. To see him perform "Wildfire" was just so incredible!" gushed Female vocalist nominee Anni Clark, who flew in from Maine to attend the show. The Academy of Texas Music is the official sanctioning organization of music awards in Texas. In an effort to insure high standards for each awarding body, the award nomination, selection, and voting process must be approved by the Academy to receive an official sanctioned status. Presently, the Texas Music Awards presented by MyTexasMusic.com are the only awards fully sanctioned by the Academy. Monday, Apr 3rd, 2006 MyCityRocks is creating a program called ROCK SAFE to help women on MySpace. MyCityRocks has formed an alliance with a group called The Bridge Over Troubled Waters that helps women that have suffered from physical and sexual abuse with counseling and shelter. We are creating a program called ROCK SAFE to help get the word out in the Houston area. Our goal is to help women understand their options when they get into bad relationships, to help people learn how to party safe, to learn how to avoid giving out personal information in their MySpace profiles that might allow "sexual predators" to find them, and to help young teens learn what to do if they are approached online by much older guys looking for sex. This will be an ongoing program with many facets. The AddMe cards will be a part of the program. We will be including weekly ROCK SAFE tips in the newsletter each week and on our MySpace profile. There will be a series of events held that we are going to produce ourselves and that will combine fun with opportunities to get out information. |
